I have run into the familiar "XF86OpenConsole ...." error when trying to enter X as a user. So RTFM - in particular the FAQ. In /etc/ttys, I found: ttyv8. "usr/X11R6/bin/xdm - nodaemon". xterm. off secure and changed off to on. This had the effect of putting me into an endless loop - X login prompt; username; password; fail to start X; X login prompt; and so on. If I deliberately used ficticious name/password, the login said "login incorrect" so this loop was not due to a failure to recognise root or me as authorised users. So ... I had something of a job finding rc.local, buried beneath several sub-directories as it is, but did find the two entries: xdm_start=NO #xdm_start=YES and reversed the comment hash. This brought me back to the "XF86OpenConsole ... " error again <sigh>. So I can use X as root but not as user. :-( PLEASE help! This issue is preventing me from making the transfer from Linux to FreeBSD - I refuse to operate as root all the time! -- Regards, Brian To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-questions" in the body of the message
