Did you know that early versions of the Sportsters have a bug in them? My Sportster V.34 was one of those, and I am receiving a free upgrade. Here is the posting that was sent to me (I don't know where it came from, but I did call USR and it's true): BUG: Early versions of US Robotics' Sprotster V.FC and V.34 modems drop connections unexpectely under certain line conditions. The company says uncompatibilities in the V.FC protocol's retraining sequences cause the problem, but the US Robotics modems aren't affected. To determine whether your Sportster is prone to the carrier-drop problem, call US Robotics' technical support department. Or start your communications application and issue the command ATI7 in the terminal window. Your modem will respond with several lines of information, including a 'Supervisor date'. Modems with the carrier-drop problem display Supervisor dates earlier than 11/30/94. FIX: US Robotics has released a revised FREE e-prom chip upgrade that corrects the problem. You can order it by contacting technical support. The company sends the chip, instructions for opening the case for external units, and a chip puller for removing the old e-prom (which you can discard or make into an earring). The company offers no other assistance for replacing the chip. Instead of making the e-prom fix, Sporster V.FC owners may opt to puchase a $29 e-prom upgrade and get the more complete V.34 28.8 kbps protocol.
