It appears that there is a bug in the /bin/sh of FreeBSD. It is there
in version 1.5.1.1 and version 2.1.0-950928-SNAP. The following script
is an example. On every other machine I've tried, this results in
output of "foobar" to the screen.

#! /bin/sh
echo -n foo 1>&1
echo bar 1>&1

GNU version 2 configure uses this with echo -n to put "Checking for ..." on
the terminal before doing the test, and then printing the answer on the same
line.
