sorry for not being clear enough and (possibly) wasting some of your time.
the thing to do is not (only) to disable dri in X-Conf, but to remove

device         radeondrm

from your kernel, and make sure the radeon.ko is not loaded. if that
doesn't fix things, i am out of ideas.
