One of the magic things that Julian and Doug Ambrisko did here when we upgraded a lot of machines to 3.0, was to *not* install the new boot blocks. Instead, there's a little a.out program (named "kernel") that is loaded instead of the real kernel that then loads the real kernel. I don't know the status of this code.
