One of the machines on my desk says "no" - it has a 9.1G Barracuda on
an Adaptec 2940UW card and not the slightest hint of a problem
(3.4-STABLE, supped 19991217). There's also a co-lo that agrees with it
(3.3-STABLE). It must be something else but I can't imagine what. A hosed
/dev/MAKEDEV comes to mind.
