In addition to any other patching you're doing to the top-level configure script, look for the following 4 lines somewhere at the bottom of the script: case "$ac_given_INSTALL" in [/$]*) INSTALL="$ac_given_INSTALL" ;; *) INSTALL="$ac_dots$ac_given_INSTALL" ;; esac and nuke 'em -- after that, you'll be fine.
