At this point I went ahead and just tried a novice install...this time choosing STANDARD boot sector..I installed the compat20 files, since they are the smallest, it installed ok. On the holographic shell I was able to see that everything on the hard drive is there, and looks fine (which means that FreeBSD is detecting it ok). With the Standard boot sector it boots to 'Missing Operating System'. I tried going to upgrade again from the installation disk to spawn the holopgraphic shell, and recompiled the kernel. Didn't help. Just for kicks I took the 540 out, put it in the intel p90, and it boots PERFECTLY.
