The modifier :u seems only to be available in CURRENT, and writing it without invoking a shell without :u is really beyond my skills. (And I think the overhead of a single extra shell invocation is really quite insignificant - for starters it will only affect gnome ports.) But if you are using a recent CURRENT, I guess _USE_GNOME=${_USE_GNOME:O:u} in the same place that I modified it last night will do the trick.
