ok, you are right, $hostname != /bin/hostname ... so the change i
proposed can be applied to rc.conf.local or whatever it is called

my goal is to setup a server for diskless machines with shared root
and /usr partition, mfs /tmp and /var, and local/nfs swap.

I have had this working for about 3 yrs now, but creating the root
partition requires some work for patching files in /etc.  The switch
to rc.conf and the presence of rc.local to override the defaults
makes things relatively easier by concentrating changes in one
place (i still need some patching to /etc/rc to mount and populate the
mfs /var so that there is a writable partition to work on, but luckily
the patch is reasonably small.)
