Which FreeBSD are you on (ie 3-STABLE, 4-STABLE, -CURRENT) ?

Strange, are you sure you updated /usr/ports/print/freetype also?

Well, mod_php4 worked for me on -CURRENT, so there should be no
need to compile it yourself.
