Had a very similar problem. The key is to figure out (or guess) which
directory xdm is looking in for the file, and put a symbolic link there,
linking to its actual location.
my libXmu.so.6.0 is in /usr/local/X11R6/lib/libXmu.so.6.0, where
/usr/X11R6 -> /usr/local/X11R6.
