Have you used USR's modem wizard to upgrade the firmware ?? Some Sportster's have a flash bios, and some don't, depends on the model. Also, check to see what's at the other end. Could be another modem that needs a firmware update. Being the odd man out isn't proof of being the "bad" guy. I currently use a USR 56K that didn't connect at very high rates until USR issued the V90 upgrade. Now I connect at 44-46K most of the time, which is pretty good for POTS.
