I had missed that the filesystem had been mounted with the 'sync' option. I
will have to check, but off the top of my head that will probably disable s=
oft
updates. If so it is very surprising that there can be any failures at all.=
 I
will investigate and let you know. Will be next week before I am likely have
time to do the investigation though.

As for the other timings, they are irrelevant if soft updates are disabled.
