Further to my previous question, I have done some digging, and it looks as
though despite the fact that DES support has been installed, the passwd
file is defaulting to different encryption, as the crypted password field
is 32 bytes, where the DES field was 13.

Is there a configuration file that I need to tweak somewhere to enable DES
support?  I noted auth.conf, but the lack of documentation for it is
somewhat disturbing, if it has been implemented.  Comments?
