Your xorg-server is also rather new.

I just installed the latest hal port but didn't see any problems after
restarting X, but I'm running xorg-server-1.9.4,1.

When I was still running 7.5.1 I had this line in this Section
	Option      "AllowEmptyInput" "on"

Can't say whether adding this line will help, but you could try it.
