The first thing to do is to reread the Handbook (you have read it already, haven't you?), and then take a look at http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/articles/releng/index.html As for stripped down systems, there are a number of approaches. Search Google for things like minibsd, picobsd, nanobsd. There are plenty of pages out there. Good luck!
