Talking to myself again - Well, I don't know if anybody cares much, but the problem I described was obviously caused by KDE being set to force its color and font settings on non-KDE applications. This is turned on by default, and it didn't seem to have caused any problems before I installed additional fonts. Right now, however, turning this KDE option off makes my Netscape look normal again.
