Further; I've experimented with the various color "themes" that lxterminal provides. The results are the same. It is clear to me this is a character rendering problem. utf-8 vs ASCII vs (???). In any case; either vim(1) is sending something other terminals simply ignore, or that lxterminal is MISinterpreting. In any case, now that I can reproduce it.
