Can you go back to version 1.36 of mount_msdosfs.c and 
rebuild mount_msdosfs?  Try running mount_msdosfs under truss
by doing something like:

truss -o/tmp/msdos_output.txt mount_msdosfs /dev/whatever /mnt

If it works, send the output of msdos_output.txt
