The FreeBSD partition is > 900 megs. I use the Auto command to create the labels in the partition. 1. what hapens if you hit `?' at the Boot: prompt? what do you get? 2. Is this the first partition on your hard drive? If not, what is the size of the first partition? You may be runing into the BIOS limit here.
