The first time I tried to run xdm I had the same problem . Here's my own solution 1) put path/to/startkde in .xsession and try to run kdm 2) if it doesn't work also replicate your environment inside .xsession . The syntax you must use is the one for the Sh shell . This should work. 3) now you're ready for the final step (if you like ) .
