I think the best solution would be: Add more RAM.

+ better performance (decreases swap used)
+ fast installation (total downtime less than 10 mins) [okay, using
  vn(4) has no downtime at all]
+ no software modification needed
+ changes easy to revert
+ RAM is very cheap these days (just bought 1 GByte (4x256) PC133
  for EUR 130)
