I'm not sure what FreeBSD plans to do with new sound drivers, but I recommend (at least for the time being), the Open Sound System by 4Front Technologies (http://www.4front-tech.com). They offer Full Duplex on the AWE64 as well as AudioPCI support. Their drivers are lkms, and they run $20. There is a demo you can download for both FreeBSD 2.2.x and 3.0.
