I'm not sure what FreeBSD plans to do with new sound drivers, but I
recommend (at least for the time being), the Open Sound System by 4Front
Technologies (http://www.4front-tech.com).  They offer Full Duplex on
the AWE64 as well as AudioPCI support.  Their drivers are lkms, and
they run $20.  There is a demo you can download for both FreeBSD 2.2.x
and 3.0.
