Me too (or is that "me three"?)

Other than playing with some of the new features is there a way to
detect it is really IPFW2 which is loaded and running? I don't see any
hints in dmesg to indicate anything has changed so I have doubts.

I think this is the most likely place in dmesg's output to look:

: IP packet filtering initialized, divert disabled, rule-based forwarding
: enabled, default to deny, logging logging unlimited
