The /etc/rc.shutdown script is run quite fine if you use the shutdown(8) utility, which also happens to be referenced in the halt(8) manual page. Quoting from the halt(8) manual page: Normally, the shutdown(8) utility is used when the system needs to be halted or restarted, giving users advance warning of their impending doom and cleanly terminating specific programs.
