Actually I find the basics of its design pretty simple (cow/txg/zil) and for that reason I think it is going to become very robust in the near future, if it isn't already. What is complex is the various journal and soft-updates code that traditional file systems use. But yes it has performance problems in some workloads and needs more cpu/ram than usual.
