try adding this to your kernel config file and recompiling your kernel
controller pnp0
device pcm0 at isa? port ? tty irq 10 drq 1 flags 0x0
then cd /dev
./MAKEDEV snd1
and you should now have working sound
or you can use OSS, which has been disappointing on 3.x
