If nobody responds to a question, it is probably because they do not know the answer. When I first moved from FreeBSD to Linux, I had exactly the same problem as the one you describe. I asked freebsd-questions (once) and didn't get any responses that solved the problem. A friend who knew his way around the kernel tried to port the Linux "reboot=bios" method, but we never did get it to work.
