Here's the problem.

You cannot use this ATA controller with FreeBSD 4.0 and above. Support
for old, broken IDE controllers was removed. It will probably work
with previous versions of FreeBSD. I too used to have a Pentium in the
office with the same issue. It ran fine on FreeBSD 3.5.
