Oops - no you don't - you said you were using .xinitrc. Well, that will fail as xdm looks for ~/.xsession. Try the following: cat > ~/.xsession exec your_window_manager_path_here ^D chmod +x ~/.xsession Then try logging in again. If that fails please look at .xsession-errors and see what it lists.
