I therefore corrected the cc:

I can only comment this one. Init starts kdm with the line
/usr/local/bin/kdm -nodaemon ttyv8
and kdm barks about the final ttyv8. No harm at all. BTW, xdm doesn't
expect this parameter neither, so I Think this a relict of older xdm
versions. Any comments folks?

Sorry, I can't comment on these. Question #3 for sure needs the
literal error message, to be answered.
