| Not to go into too much detail, but I strongly recommend against a Compaq.

I would be curious as to some detail. I have a 1700 that I am not unhappy
with. It has issues as everylaptop that I have ever had but it just depends
on what you need it to do. Sound, XFree86, pcmcia, usb all work well. I've
not tested the winmodem but am sure it doesn't work. My only simi-important
issues are the dc0: <Conexant LANfinity Mini PCI 10/100BaseTX> that almost
works, but generates "dc0: failed to force tx and rx to idle state" messages
but since I have many pcmcia cards, it isn't a big problem and it works
great with my collection of wireless pcmcia cards. The major drawback is
the lack of a serial port. I can't use my cellular phone serial cable and
don't know of another way to connect when traveling. It was reasonably
priced and is very fast. I run current and do a make world on it every
day in about an hour and fifteen minutes.
