The *proper* way to shutdown sendmail, and this is the method given in the sendmail documentation, is to use the pid file (for convenience) and send it a TERM signal: kill -TERM `head -1 /var/run/sendmail.pid` kill -9 could cause corrupted mail files, loss of email, etc...
