Still crashes. gnome-terminal segfaults before it opens too. I suspect some fundamental gnome2 library or component is jacked up... FWIW gnome2's gnome-session was doing the same thing until I commented out the line 'xml:readonly:/usr/X11R6/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults' in the file /usr/X11R6/etc/gconf/2/path.
