Kind of.  It's an attempt to fill a big gap that has only recently
become apparent to me.  That is what you describe below, and what I have
learned by listening to desktop-devel-list@: the GNOME Desktop is not a
complete Desktop Environment.

Exactly!  Users don't know what apps work well with GNOME.  The Fifth
Toe was good, but it turned out to be a dumping ground for all kinds of
apps, most of which are never used by anyone.  What I would like to
accomplish with this split is to create some more specialized groupings
of GNOME apps that are more useful to a broader base of users.  I used
the successful garnome (http://www.gnome.org/~jdub/garnome/) project as
a model for this.  Of course, we are not tied to their choices,but it is
a good starting point.

We would evaluate them based on functionality, stability, and
usefulness, and decide in which group they best fit.  We need not be
slaves to the applications' maintainers, but only to what we feel is
right for our (FreeBSD's) users.
