Thanks to everyone. Turns out, it was open Samba logs that I'd deleted over time. I'm ashamed to admit, I did it to myself. Killing the parent smbd seems to solve the problem with the usual wailing from users. Rebooting definately worked. I learned a lot from all your answers.
