The most recent ACM "Transactions on Networking" issue (for the datacomm SIG) had a (I think republished) article on the many different ways that ethernet speed has been computed in the past, the relative accuracy of the approaches, etc etc. I would imagine it is beginning to show up in university libraries by now. It's possible you can order it as well - try http://www.acm.org for information.
