I agree that as  a httpd server, apache  is much better.  But the one thing
CERN got right  is the proxy  scheme. Till a few  months ago, this  was the
only solution to have a httpd proxy. Now Harvest is out (I haven't tried it
but many people said it is faster than CERN).
