I would suggest 3.  I installed 2.1.6-RELEASE on Monday and supped stable on
Wednesday.  I successfully did a make world last night (3 hours on a Pentium
166 with 64MB).

Yes.  According to the handbook, stable is a bug fix channel for release.  I
supped the entire tree except for DES.
