What type of network are you on that you have to use the combo?

Heh, yeah right.  I've disabled enough serial ports that miraculously
reappear in Windows 95 to make anyone sick.  I'll bet you money the card
is not releasing it's resources.  ALso, are you sure you're zapping the
right card?  3c5x9cfg may be seeing the motherboard one and editing it and
not your add-in one.

There are problems, but this shouldn't be one of them.
