If your bare sole comes down on something hard and possibly sharp, your immediate reflex is to lift your foot away from the object. If this object is a brake pedal and you're trying to slam on the anchors, the sudden connection between the sole of your foot and the pedal is likely to cause you to immediately take your foot off the brakes. This is obviously a bad thing.
