Think about the fact that both the mail reception program (mail) and your mailer, ELM, have to have access to your mail queue. If they get in there at the same time, doing different things to the file, they corrupt the file. This happens most often (in my experience) when someone is trying to mount their mail spool directory via NFS, which has broken file locking in most architectures (including FreeBSD).
