I probably should have been more explanatory, but as you say I'm
a bit short on email time at the moment.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but what motivated my reply
was the fact that your message could have been a practical excerpt
of conversations that have gone before, some as long as 3 years ago.
Not one of the goals or proposed methods you suggested were in
any way new - it's all been said before. What would be new is someone
actually implementing all that stuff, and hence my reply. :-)

I also have fond hopes for Mike Smith's efforts, of course, but it
goes without saying that he's not going to be able to add all those
creture comfort features alone. I hope that others will be more
forthcoming with actual code so that the goals expoused by yourself
and many others before you can actually be realized. There's no
shortage of ideas on what needs to be done, believe me. :-(
