Seems simple. The egcs code *must* be compiled "with threads support". You need to look into what that means to understand the problem. Consider that, much as you or I might not like it, some people aren't going to want to link with libc_r. Your fix is "another fix for libgcc2.a" for FSF, but does nothing for Cygnus. 8-(.
