 It seems you have tried to compile Pine 3.96 to me, or at least an old
version of the 4.x branch...

 No, the syntax for shared library linking for ELF for cc has changed, so
the pine3 / Pine 3.96 port has to be "heavily" patched -- in the mean time
try the 4.05 port, you can get it from:

   ftp://ftp.freebsd.ady.ro/ports/pine/4.05/pine4.tar.gz
   http://members.xoom.com/adyx/FreeBSD/ports/pine/4.05/pine4.tar.gz

 BTW, I've tested it under FreeBSD 3.0-19980927-BETA, it works OK for
me...
