I had also done a "kill -HUP" on freefall's mountd before that, but I don't know whether that made any difference. Part of the problem may have been that hub's /home/ncvs symlink pointed to "/net/freefall/x/ncvs" instead of "/host/freefall/x/ncvs". There are a few home directories linked incorrectly the same way.
