It's not fun, but against the competition, once you get it working smoothly, it's far better normally than configure, which depends on each author's whims. 30% of configure scripts are broken badly with custom code. 60% of libtool scripts are busted for FreeBSD, and the number is lots higher if you want to include any platforms *excepting* Linux.
