Well, I used to run KDE for quite a while under freebsd (I switched
to windowmaker a while back) the ports system is great for building
the latest version of kde, just take a look:

/usr/ports % ls -d */*kde*
audio/kdemultimedia11 net/kdenetwork11
audio/kdemultimedia11-i18n net/kdenetwork11-i18n
converters/kdesupport11 net/kdetelnet
converters/kdesupport11-i18n x11-clocks/kdetoys11-i18n
games/kdegames11 x11-fm/tkdesk
games/kdegames11-i18n x11/kde11
graphics/kdegraphics11 x11/kde11-i18n
graphics/kdegraphics11-i18n x11/kdebase11
japanese/kdelocale x11/kdebase11-i18n
misc/kdeutils11 x11/kdelibs11
misc/kdeutils11-i18n x11/kdelibs11-i18n

there are also pre-compiled packages available, last I checked the KDE
folks were being very gracious about making sure it compiled under
FreeBSD as well as Linux. Something not done until very recently
in the gnome/gtk world.

as far as staroffice, there are some funky hacks you have to
perform to get it to work, I would do a search of the mailing
lists for information on Staroffice, you can search the lists
from www.freebsd.org.

enabling linux emulation is easy, as root just type "linux"
and install the linux libraries:
cd /usr/ports/emulators/linux_lib ; make install

you'll have to edit /etc/rc.conf to enable linux compatibility
when the machine next boots.
